How much can you shrink a picture?
A 12-megapixel phone photo is 3 to 6 MB. At 75% quality it is usually under 1 MB with no visible change. To get below 100 KB the picture must also be smaller in pixels, because quality alone cannot go that far.
Pick the right setting
- Websites and email: JPG or WebP at 75 to 80%, up to 1920 pixels wide.
- Application forms: use a size target, such as 50 KB or 200 KB.
- Logos and screenshots: PNG with fewer colours, or WebP.
- Photos saved as PNG: convert to JPG or WebP, which are many times smaller.
Lossy and lossless, in one line each
JPG and WebP are lossy: they discard detail you will not miss, which is why they get so small. PNG is lossless: it keeps every pixel, so it only shrinks by storing fewer colours.

How do I compress an image without losing quality?
Use 75 to 85% quality and shrink the picture to the size you actually need. The change is hard to see and the file is much smaller.
How do I reduce an image to 100 KB?
Choose 'To a size' and enter 100, or open the compress to 100 KB page. The tool lowers quality and, if needed, the pixel size.
