How to take a passport size photo at home (India)

India's passport photo is 35 × 45 mm on a plain white background. Stand facing a white wall in even daylight, have someone take the photo at eye level from about 1.5 metres, then crop it to 35 × 45 mm in Resize Baba's passport studio and print the sheet at 100% scale.

Steps

  1. Stand in front of a plain white wall with daylight on your face. Avoid a window behind you.
  2. Have someone take the photo at eye level from about 1.5 to 2 metres, using the back camera.
  3. Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression and both eyes open. No glasses glare, hat or heavy filter.
  4. Open the passport studio and add the photo. Choose 35 × 45 mm, then press Make it perfect to centre the head and set a white background.
  5. Pick a 4×6 inch sheet and print it on photo paper at 100% scale, not 'fit to page'.
  6. Cut along the thin lines.

Common mistakes

  • Shadows on the face or on the wall behind.
  • Head tilted or chin raised.
  • Photo taken too close, which distorts the face.
  • Printing at the wrong scale, so the photo isn't 35 × 45 mm.

Check the official rules

Rules were updated in 2025 and can change again. Confirm the current size, background and upload limits on the official passport website before you apply.
