Compress a PNG
To compress a PNG, drop it in and the tool reduces the number of colours (128 looks the same for most graphics and logos), keeping transparent areas transparent. You see the new size and the saving before you download. Nothing is uploaded.

How it works
- Drop your picture into the box above, or paste it with Ctrl+V.
- Choose a quality, or tell it the largest size you can accept in KB.
- Check the size shown, then download the smaller file.
How PNG compression works
PNG is lossless, so it cannot simply throw away detail the way JPG does. The best way to shrink one is to store it with a limited palette: 256 colours is plenty for logos, icons, screenshots and charts. The tool uses a median-cut palette and a lossless compressor.
Photos in PNG
A photo saved as PNG has millions of colours, so reducing colours will show. Converting photos to JPG or WebP makes them many times smaller, with no visible loss at 80 to 90% quality.
Questions people ask
Does compressing a PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. Transparent areas stay transparent.
Why is my PNG so large?
PNG stores every pixel exactly. Photos and gradients are the biggest. Reduce colours, shrink the pixels, or convert photos to JPG or WebP.
Is it lossless?
Reducing colours is a small, controlled loss. With 256 colours graphics usually look identical; lower it only if you need the file smaller.
Is it free?
Yes. No signup, no watermark, and no limit on how many pictures you compress.
Is my picture uploaded?
No. Compression happens in your browser, so the picture never leaves your device.
