Compress a JPG or JPEG

To compress a JPG, drop it in and lower the quality a little (75% is usually the best balance) or choose a size such as 200 KB. You see the new size and how much smaller it is before you download. The picture never leaves your device.

How it works

  1. Drop your picture into the box above, or paste it with Ctrl+V.
  2. Choose a quality, or tell it the largest size you can accept in KB.
  3. Check the size shown, then download the smaller file.

How JPG compression works

JPG removes detail the eye barely notices. Going from 100% to 80% usually cuts the file to a third or less with no visible change. Below about 60% blocky patches appear around edges and in the sky.

Get it even smaller

  • Shrink the picture too: a phone photo is often 4000 pixels wide, far more than a screen or a form needs.
  • Crop away what you do not need first.
  • Compress from the original, not a copy that was already compressed.
